Engagement Ring Sizing: Secret Ways to Find Your Partner's Size

Proposing is exciting — and stressful, especially when it comes to getting the ring size right without tipping off your partner. Here are the most effective (and discreet) strategies for finding their ring size before the big moment.

The Borrowed Ring Method

This is the most reliable approach when done carefully.

How to do it:

  1. Borrow a ring your partner wears on their ring finger (left hand, specifically, if that's where you plan to put the engagement ring)
  2. Measure the inner diameter by pressing the ring down on paper and tracing the inner circle, or using a ring sizing gauge
  3. Return the ring before they notice it's gone

Tips for success:

  • Make sure the ring actually fits the ring finger — people often wear the same ring on different fingers depending on size
  • Rings worn on the right hand may be half a size different from the left
  • Do this while they're sleeping or when you know they've set it down

Ask a Friend or Family Member

Someone in their inner circle may already know — or can find out more naturally than you can.

Who to ask:

  • A best friend or sister who might have gone ring shopping together
  • A parent who may have family ring heirlooms to reference
  • A close colleague who might have noticed rings they've tried on

Brief them to keep it secret, and ask them to find out naturally if the information isn't already known.

The Spy Measurement Method

If your partner is a heavy sleeper and you're brave enough:

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper (about 5mm wide)
  2. Gently wrap it around their ring finger while they sleep
  3. Mark where it overlaps
  4. Measure the length — that's the finger circumference
  5. Divide by 3.14 for the diameter, then use a size chart

This works remarkably well and leaves no evidence.

The Impression Method

Press a ring they own into a bar of soap or modeling clay and bring the impression to a jeweler. They can measure the impression and identify the size.

The Trace Method

While they're sleeping, place their hand on a piece of paper. Gently trace the outline of their ring finger. Use the width of the finger at its base to estimate the diameter.

When You Get It Wrong

About 50% of engagement rings need to be resized. This is completely normal and most jewelers offer one free resize with purchase.

Sizing up is easier than sizing down: If unsure, go slightly larger. A ring that's a half-size too big can be resized for $30–80. A ring that's too small may be harder to size depending on the setting and stone.

What if there's no emergency resize option? Jewelers can often do a temporary fix — adding sizing beads to the inside of the band to reduce the size slightly while a formal resize is arranged.

Average Women's Ring Sizes for Reference

Body FrameTypical US Ring Size
Petite/small4.5–6
Average6–7
Larger frame7.5–9

The global average is around a US size 6 to 6.5. If you're completely stuck, size 6 or 6.5 is a safe bet for most women.

After the Proposal

Once the ring is on, schedule a sizing appointment within the first week. Most jewelers prioritize engagement ring sizing and can turn it around quickly. The earlier you go, the better — you'll want it fitting perfectly for all the photos ahead.

The size isn't as important as the moment. If you get it wrong, that's okay — you'll have a good story to tell.
